The ACT is a standardized high school achievement test that is a common alternative to the SAT Reasoning Test. While the SAT is popular on the East and West Coast, the ACT has gained popularity in the Midwestern and Southern United States. Depending on the state, the ACT is offered between four and six times a year starting in September and continuing into June.
The ACT is divided into four subject tests: mathematics, reading, English, and science reasoning. Each of these sub-tests is scored from 1 to 36 and the average of these four tests comprises a Composite Score ranging from 1 to 36. In addition, there is an optional writing test that is scored from 2 to 12 and is not combined into the Composite Score.
One important distinction from the SAT, there is no penalty for incorrect answers on the multiple-choice ACT test. This makes effective guessing particularly important on the ACT.
