The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is written by approximately 1.3 million high school students typically in their Junior or Sophomore year. Administered by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), this multiple-choice test serves two key purposes:
(1) A standardized test that provides practice for the SAT.
(2) Determine the eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Similar to the SAT scoring, the PSAT is comprised of three sections: Mathematics, Critical Reading and Writing. Each of these sections is scored on a scale of 20 to 80 points which sums to a maximum composite score of 250.
The PSAT is used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. To qualify, student’s composite score, also referred to as their Selection Index must be approximately in the 99th percentile.
