Understand the TAKS

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a standardized test used in Texas primary and secondary schools to assess student’s skill level in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. It is scored by Pearson Educational Measurement with supervision by the Texas Education Agency.

When Students Take the Test

Students take various TAKS starting in Grade 3 and continuing through Grade 11 as described below:

• English Language Arts – Grades 10 -11
• Reading – Grades 3-9
• Writing – Grades 4 and 8
• Mathematics – Grades 3-11
• Science – Grades 5, 8, 10 and 11
• Social Studies – Grade 8, 10 and 11
